You, Too, Are a Firebreather

By Nilaja Montgomery

According to Greg Amundson, CrossFit's Founding Athlete, “A Firebreather is anyone who faces the triumphs and tribulations of great physical opposition with an indomitable spirit, or an optimistic energy associated with the heart of an athlete.”

In essence military spouses are definitely Firebreathers. At least, according to this definition. We face tribulations on a regular basis.

We are faced with deployments, PCS’, and all the things that accompany those situations. Yet, in spite of our tribulations, we do it over and over again. We still rise against all odds and get the unimaginable done. Some of us become athletes (rather in CrossFit or being involved in another sport like running clubs, or soccer clubs). Some of us are athletes while having children who depend on us, while our spouse is away. Some of us have full-time jobs or are full-time students, while being full-time caretakers and finance gurus in our families. Yet, somehow we still get it all done.

Now as busy people with little time for self-care and lives that are nothing short of unpredictable, I asked Greg what nuggets of wisdom he had for us spouses when it comes to Fitness and Health.

He told me it’s about the Power of our Mind. Think Fit and Think Healthy. Have a great fitness routine. Jesus says, “It’s not what goes into your mouth, it’s what comes out.” The quality of our thoughts will lead our actions. Self-affirmations are the key. If you think more than not, “I’m Fat, then you will be fat.” The first step to being Fit and Healthy is your thinking (Nutrition of the Mind).

The second step is nutrition of the body. If you have to choose between a nutritious meal or a workout, choose the nutrition. Food choices should include lean sources of protein and fruits and veggies.

The third step is working out, and of course he suggests CrossFit! It’s the easiest way to get a full-body workout that will get you clear results. Greg’s book Firebreather Fitness breaks this entire philosophy down.

Where did the original term Firebreather derive? It was the name of Fran before Fran. And before Firebreather, Fran was called Pull-Ups and Thrusters. “Fran, as written, is a couplet of barbell thrusters (a front squat/push-press combo) and pull-ups,” according to Men’s Fitness Magazine. If you have ever completed Fran, then you may have felt that you too have breathed fire. And after Fran, there’s usually a lingering cough. Maybe during, or after the workout, one may even taste iron or blood. Who would endure these types of workouts? Those who call themselves "CrossFitters."

Greg Amundson was one of Coach Greg Glassman’s first CrossFit athletes. Greg Glassman is, of course, one of the founders and CEO of CrossFit. As a Level 1 Trainer, Greg Amundson's name is on every certificates I have earned. How cool is that?

But more importantly, Greg began CrossFit 17 years ago to keep up with the demands of his career as a Law Enforcement Officer. As Greg says in his book, Firebreather, “The truth hit: I wasn’t ready for the harsh reality of the job. The training had failed me. In an impromptu fight with a random parolee, I could barely hang on.”

It was then Greg decided to change his training to CrossFit. To learn more about Greg’s transition and his now Philosophy of Life through fitness, check out Firebreather. You will be happy you did!
